A while ago I started a journey. I had been retired a couple years or so by then and somehow I got on the "kick" of reading retirement books. By that time I was an "old expert" at the retirement thing and I wanted to see who knew their stuff and who was simply blowing smoke. (And believe me, there are plenty of people out there who are writing about retirement who don't … [Read more...]

The 12 Most Important Decisions You Must Make Before You Retire, Part 1
Today I'm going to cover a new retirement book I just completed. This one is How to Retire Happy which has the subtitle of "The 12 Most Important Decisions You Must Make Before You Retire". Over the course of a couple posts I'll share some of the unique parts I liked about this book and let you decide what you think. But before we get to that, let's take time to make a … [Read more...]
101 Fun Things to Do In Retirement
I just finished a fun little retirement book called 101 Fun Things to Do in Retirement. We've discussed a few issues around retirement activities in previous posts. First, we've discovered (or at least I have, maybe you knew it already) that some people retire and are then bored out of their minds -- they don't know what to do with their time. This makes for a sad … [Read more...]
Atomic Habits to Become Wealthy
A few months ago a friend and ESI Money reader recommended I check out Atomic Habits. I had heard of the book (of course) and since this friend has regularly suggested great books for me to read, I added it to my list (which was pretty long at that point). I got to it sooner than I expected and devoured it within a couple days. To say I loved it is an understatement. … [Read more...]
How to Retire Overseas, Part 3
Today we'll finish looking at the ten steps people can take at home to think through the issues surrounding retiring overseas. The list is from the great book How to Retire Overseas: Everything You Need to Know to Live Well (for Less) Abroad, one I certainly recommend if you're thinking of ever moving overseas (or just like the concept). As usual, I'll share what the book … [Read more...]

How to Retire Overseas, Part 1
In my life there have been certain books that are just "it" when you need to address a specific issue. They are the go-to solution for something you're looking to address. For instance, The First 90 Days is a book I have read and followed after accepting almost every new job I've ever had. It's designed to help you make your first three months a success and is a very … [Read more...]
The Five Years Before You Retire
I'm making my way through the most popular retirement books on Amazon (I select them by looking at the ratings and the number of comments a book receives). Today I am posting about The 5 Years Before You Retire written by fellow money blogger Emily Guy Birken. I'm not sure I've ever met Emily but I see her in the FinCon Facebook group now and then, so I feel like I know … [Read more...]
How to Refire in Retirement
Today we have a unique retirement book to review. I'm torn on it -- there are some things I like about the book and others I'm not so fond of. Refire! Don't Retire: Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life is basically about moving to a higher gear in retirement, a different theme from the "how to have a happy retirement" focus of most books. It's this … [Read more...]
